Key Ideas

Where there is a problem, there is a solution

If there is a problem and somebody found a solution for it, you can too. The philosophy behind the book Everything is Figureoutable is that every problem has a solution. You only need to put in the work to find the solution. For most do it yourself projects, you can find easily applicable instruction videos on YouTube.

But once you embrace the attitude of everything is figureoutable, you will find that you can apply your newfound philosophy to all areas of life. You can find solutions to your personal and financial problems as well.

If we embrace the philosophy of everything is figureoutable, it will not make it easier to find a solution for a problem. Still, it encourages us to try hard to find that solution, instead of giving up immediately.

Force yourself to try

Everything is figureoutable is not about following the positive thinking hype. It does not make any promises that the path to solving your problem will be easy. But you also need to be aware that negative thinking won't help you. For example, when you tell yourself I cannot do it, why should you even try?

So, positive thinking will not help you, but if you avoid negative thoughts like I cannot do it it will help you immensely because you will allow yourself to try it. Trying is the first step to finding any solution.

If you try something, you may find that it is not that hard as you initially thought, which will empower you.

Thinking there is a solution should be your default

We all have self-limiting beliefs. We could try to identify our various limiting beliefs and try to work hard to replace them with self-empowering views. Even if this might be possible, there is a much simpler approach to overcome your self-limiting beliefs.

There is only one thing you need to do. Tell yourself that there is a solution to every problem. If you take this to heart, you will find that indeed, 99 % of our problems, if not all, have a solution.

By thinking there is a solution, you will significantly increase your chance of finding one, simply because you allow yourself to try.

Limiting beliefs are just excuses in disguise

Why do we have limiting beliefs in the first place? What is the purpose of a self-limiting belief?

Most limiting beliefs are just excuses in disguise. We embrace these excuses because they are convenient. By having an excuse, we do not need to change, and we do not need to do the hard work required to reach an objective. The justification, the limiting belief, allows us to say to ourselves I can't instead of I don't want to.

People do not want to change. Change is inconvenient. Embracing limiting beliefs is more convenient than putting in the hard work to make progress.

There are three prevalent excuses

I don't have enough time.. I don't have enough money. I don't know how to do it.

Those are the three most used excuses. You hear them all the time.

When we hear these excuses from others, we usually recognize them as being excuses. When we tell these excuses to ourselves, it is much harder to recognize. We often lack awareness.

If it's important enough, I'll make the time. If not, I'll make an excuse.―Marie Forleo

So next time you hear yourself saying I don't have time. Stop. Ask yourself, is this true. If you have a Netflix subscription, I can tell you that the answer is a clear No.

Use fear as a tool

Fear is a powerful force. It can hold you back, or it can bring you forward. You should not learn to ignore your fear. Learn to use your fear as a tool. Your fear can be a compass, pointing out what you want in life. Do not use fear as being yet another excuse not to take action.

Gain clarity by taking action and making small steps

You might have faced the following paradox in your life:

You do not decide because you do not have the clarity to make that decision. And, you do not gain clarity because you don't make a decision.

In another context, we call this analysis paralysis.

There is a simple solution to how you can dissolve this situation. Just start and take action. This way, you begin the learning process and ultimately gain the necessary clarity to make a decision.

To begin anything new or learn anything new means you will be a neophyte. You must go from outsider to insider. Respect that. Embrace it. Be willing to suck.―Marie Forleo

Making the first step without in-depth analysis does not mean you should not make plans at all. Remember, you are only making a first, small step to gain more clarity.

The truth is you can only gain clarity by taking action.

First Insight: We should not wait till we feel ready

Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.―Marie Forleo

We all want to be well prepared. This desire often holds us back. How should we be able to acquire the skills and confidence when we have never started? This is a paradox.

We need to take action first. We need to start our journey of learning. And this can only be done as soon as we find the courage to start.

Second Insight: You should make Everything is figureoutable your new mantra

You can do whatever you set your mind to if you just roll up your sleeves, get in there, and do it. Everything is figureoutable.―Marie Forleo

We all know the truth. We cannot figure out the solution to every problem on this planet. But this doesn't matter.

By merely thinking there is a solution to my problem, I allow myself to try finding it. This mantra will not allow you to make excuses. It will give you an empowering philosophy. A philosophy which supports you to take action.

I do think that positive thinking is helpful in itself. But ridding yourself of negative thinking in combination with taking action can lead to significant changes in one's life.

Third Insight: Negative thoughts can become a self-fulfilling prophecy

Insight without action is worthless. Taking action is the only path to change.―Marie Forleo

If you tell yourself I don't have the skill to do X, you already found an excuse for yourself not to take action. And you will never prove you wrong because you will never have tried: a self-fulfilling prophecy

On the contrary, if you think I can figure it out, you empower yourself. You should allow yourself to take action and learn. Sure, you can fail and not reach your goal. But you will have learned something. You will have gained an insight that you did not have before.

I win, or I learn, but I never lose.―Marie Forleo

Conclusion

Marie Forleo offers a small philosophy of life that will support you in achieving those things you want to pursue in your life. She is not telling you that you need to think positive, and things will magically fall into place.

She explains why it is useful to have the belief that everything can be figured out, even if it might not be accurate in all cases.
